The location of the Centralised Temporary Storage facility has not yet been decided. The process, which adheres to the directives of the European COWAM programme, is governed by the principles of transparency and voluntary participation.
The COWAM Spain project has included the participation of representatives of town councils, the autonomous communities, universities, professional associations, institutions and organisations such as the Nuclear Safety Council and Enresa.
"The process is in the information phase, prior to the submittal of candidatures following the corresponding call for proposals in the Official State Gazette."
On June 23rd 2006, the Government approved the setting up of an Inter-ministerial Commission to establish the criteria to be met by the final site for the CTS facility.
Site selection has been carried out in the same way in other countries that already have this type of installation in operation. In Spain the process is in the information phase, prior to the submittal of candidatures following the corresponding call for proposals in the Official State Gazette.
