The transport of radioactive materials is carried out in accordance with the Regulation on Transport of the International Atomic Energy Agency and with European directives.

In order to guarantee safety, casks designed to withstand any event, means of transport equipped with different safety systems and highly specialised drivers will be used.

High level wastes have been transported over more than 30 million kilometres across the world without any radiological incident.

Transport cask

The transport cask is a steel cylinder with different types of shielding used for the transport of spent fuel.

The tests to which this cask is subjected guarantee its integrity in the event of any incident.

"High level wastes have been transported over more than 30 million kilometres across the world without any radiological incident"

  • Free fall from a height of 9 metres.
  • Free fall from a height of one metre onto a steel punch.
  • Fire resistant to temperatures of 800ºC for 30 minutes.
  • Immersion tests at different depths.

In addition, the casks have passed tests simulating extreme situations, such as the impact of a locomotive at more than 130 km/h
