Classification of radioactive wastes

In Spain radioactive wastes are classified in accordance with the characteristics that influence the way in which they are managed. Thus, a distinction is made between the following:

Low and Intermediate Level Wastes (LILW)

  • Low specific activity
  • Beta-gamma emitters
  • Very low concentrations of alpha emitters
  • Half life of less than 30 years
  • Non heat generating

Very Low Level Wastes (VLLW)

  • Very low specific activity (< 100Bq/g)
  • Fewer management requirements

High Level Wastes (HLW)

  • Appreciable concentrations of alpha emitters
  • Half life of more than 30 years
  • May generate heat
