In Spain radioactive wastes are classified in accordance with the characteristics that influence the way in which they are managed. Thus, a distinction is made between the following:

- Low specific activity
- Beta-gamma emitters
- Very low concentrations of alpha emitters
- Half life of less than 30 years
- Non heat generating
Very Low Level Wastes (VLLW)
- Very low specific activity (< 100Bq/g)
- Fewer management requirements
