Since 1986 the Spanish legislation has established that the owners of radioactive lightning rods should either homologate them as radioactive facilities, if they wish to keep them, or request their disassembly by Enresa.

Enresa has removed more than 22,000 radioactive lightning rod headers, most containing Americium 241
Up until 2005, more than 22,000 radioactive lightning rod headers were removed, most of the containing Americium 241. Following their disassembly by CIEMAT, they were sent to the United Kingdom for definitive management.
Although the campaign continues to be open, at present very few of these items are located, these being gradually removed and disassembled as established.
